Tata Electronics has initiated the groundbreaking for a Rs 27,000 crore assembly testing marking and packaging (ATMP) unit in Jagiroad, Assam. From this pioneering fab unit in the country, Tata aims to start producing chips by 2026.
The company has already hired 1,000 individuals from Assam for the chip assembly unit, who are currently undergoing training. The facility is expected to begin operations by mid-2025, creating 27,000 direct and indirect jobs, according to the company.
“At the Tata group, we have uniquely positioned ourselves to engage in the entire value chain of the electronics ecosystem,” stated N Chandrasekaran, chairman of Tata Sons, during the groundbreaking event.
Chandrasekaran added, “We are accelerating the construction of this factory to move quickly. We anticipate completing part of the facility by 2025 and promptly starting operations.”
Ashwini Vaishnaw, Minister of Electronics and IT, mentioned, “The plant will utilize three major chip technologies, including flip chip and I-SIP (integrated system in package), all developed indigenously.” He also noted, “The proposed capacity of this unit is 48.3 million chips per day.”
In February, the Union Cabinet approved semiconductor projects worth Rs 1.26 trillion under the Rs 76,000 crore semiconductor incentive scheme. Among these projects are Tata’s Rs 91,000 crore fabrication unit in Dholera, Gujarat, and the Rs 27,000 crore ATMP unit.
Chandrasekaran highlighted that the Assam unit will handle advanced packaging and assembly of chips and will also develop capabilities to design chips for various industries. The chips assembled at this facility will power electric vehicles, mobile phones, laptops, and healthcare devices for global companies.
“Once this facility expands, it will attract the entire semiconductor ecosystem. We will require several companies to produce different components, and as we grow, these companies will start by supplying and eventually set up their units here,” Chandrasekaran stated, emphasizing the company’s commitment to research and development.
Himanta Biswa Sarma, Chief Minister of Assam, commented that the establishment of this facility will drive industrial development in the state, creating employment opportunities for the youth.
Ashok Chandak, President of the India Electronics and Semiconductor Association (IESA), said, “This state-of-the-art ATMP/OSAT facility is expected to pave the way for more ATMP facilities across the country, contributing to India’s projected $100 billion semiconductor market by 2030.”
