Google is stepping up its efforts to combat spam within RCS Business Messages (RBM) by testing a dedicated ‘STOP’ button. Spotted in the Google Messages v20241125_04 beta, this feature aims to simplify the process of unsubscribing from unwanted promotional messages.
Simplifying the Unsubscribe Process
Currently, users can manually unsubscribe from RBM by replying with the keyword ‘STOP’ or blocking and reporting individual senders. The new dedicated button will automate this process, allowing users to opt out with a single tap. When users press the ‘STOP’ button, the app will automatically send the required keyword, removing them from the sender’s list.
After opting out, users will receive a confirmation message from the sender acknowledging their removal. Should users decide to rejoin the messaging list, they can simply text ‘START’ to the business.
A Step Towards Better RCS Management
This tool addresses a significant pain point for RCS users who have been grappling with an influx of unsolicited promotional content. By integrating the ‘STOP’ button directly into RBM chats, Google Messages makes it easier for users to take control of their messaging experience.
Google Messages: Continuous Evolution
Google Messages is already the go-to app for RCS messaging, offering features like:
- Read receipts
- Typing indicators
- Group chats
- End-to-end encryption
The app’s frequent updates highlight Google’s commitment to improving user experience. Earlier this year, it introduced a link warning system to protect users from potential phishing attacks via RCS messages from unknown senders.
New Media Sharing UI in Testing
In addition to the ‘STOP’ button, Google is also experimenting with a revamped media-sharing interface in the beta version 20241118_03_RC00. This updated UI, inspired by WhatsApp, merges the camera viewfinder and gallery icon into a single button. Once rolled out, the feature will provide a fullscreen camera viewfinder alongside previews of the last three gallery images, making it easier to share media.
The Road Ahead
While the ‘STOP’ button and updated media-sharing UI are still in beta testing, their eventual rollout could significantly enhance the usability of Google Messages. However, the exact timeline for these features to reach the stable version remains unclear.
These developments further solidify Google Messages’ position as a leading RCS platform, offering tools designed to combat spam, improve media sharing, and deliver seamless communication experiences. Stay tuned for more updates as these features continue to evolve.
