Bhai Dooj falls two days after the festival of Diwali. It is similar to the festival of Raksha Bandhan. On this day sisters pray for the long and healthy lives of their brothers. Bhai dooj is known by many different names in different parts of the country like Bhau Beej, Bhai Teeka or Bhai Phota. Just like Raksha Bandhan this festival also celebrates the love of a brother and sister. On this day, Sisters invite brothers to her home and applies ‘Teeka’ on their forehead and pray to god for their well being and in return brothers present their sisters with gifts.
Mythology has divided the origin of Bhai dooj. Some people believe, Yamraj, the god of death, visited his sister, Yami who is also known as Yamuna, on this day. She welcomed him with an aarti and after tilak on his forehead, she offered him, sweets. And in return Yamraj presented her with a gift which showed his love and affection for her. Moved by the love of his sister, Yamraj declared that any brother who would receive an aarti and tilak from his sister on the day of Bhai dooj, should never be afraid of death.
After this story, this festival is also called as Yama Dwitiya in some parts of the country. Another origin story for the festival is that Lord Krishna’s sister Subhadra welcomed her brother with a tilak, sweets and aarti after he returned back after killing the demon king Narakasur.
