The word ‘Dhanteras’ is a blend of two words. In Hindi, the word ‘Dhan’ means wealth and the word ‘Tera’ means thirteen. It is considered to be one of the most auspicious days amongst the Hindu community. On this day, Hindus worship goddess Lakshmi, who is the goddess of wealth. Dhanteras marks the beginning of the immensely popular festival of Diwali. It is considered to be a very important day for the Hindu community. People usually buy utensils, gold or silver on this day. These utensils or commodities are bought because it is considered that Goddess Lakshmi then showers the household with more such kind of wealth. Dhanteras rangoli is also made by people in their house.
Not only Goddess Lakshmi is worshipped on this day, but it is also important for Kuber as well. He is the god of wealth. The auspicious Dhanteras worshipping (Puja) of Goddess Lakshmi and God Kuber is done together in some households as it is believed that this will double the benefits of the prayers. Also, this day is considered to be an extremely significant day for business communities. On this day, many people buy new account books and place them in front of goddess Lakshmi to get her blessings. It is believed that any business started on this day will be very profitable.
A girl child born on the day of Dhanteras is also considered very auspicious, as it is believed that a form of Goddess Lakshmi has arrived in the household. Apart from God Kuber and Goddess Lakshmi, God Dhanvantari is also worshipped on this day in Dhanteras Aarti. He is the god of Ayurveda, who conveyed the wisdom of Ayurveda for the betterment of humankind and also, to get rid of the suffering of a disease.
